About CIM

The community behind CIM CONNECT

The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) connects professionals across Canada’s minerals and metals industry. Through technical knowledge, professional development and industry events, CIM helps people share expertise and address the challenges facing the sector.

Who is CIM

CIM is a professional community of more than 10,000 members working across the minerals life cycle. Its technical societies and network of branches bring together people from different disciplines and career stages to exchange knowledge and strengthen industry practice.

CIM CONNECT is CIM’s premier convention and expo: a place for that community to meet, learn and make connections in person.

What CIM does

  • Shares technical knowledge through publications, resources and opportunities for experts to exchange ideas.
  • Supports professional development through training, events and learning across career stages.
  • Connects the industry through technical societies, local branches, conferences and networking.
  • Advances responsible practice by bringing professionals together to address industry challenges and share leading practices.
about cim

A history built on
shared knowledge

CIM was incorporated in 1898 as the Canadian Mining Institute. Its founders sought stronger safety laws and worker protections, along with a way for mining professionals to share ideas.
The organization grew alongside the industries it serves. It became the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1920 and adopted its current name in 1990. Today, CIM continues to connect professionals and support technical excellence across the industry.
